What
is 3D art?
3D computer
artworks are scenes composed of objects created in three dimensions
and positioned within a scene also created in three dimensions.
Once the scene is composed and fully programmed by the artist, the
computer renders the scene into a 2D image, such as any of those
seen here.
This skill is
highly technical and demands deep understanding of 3D concepts and
software. But also, artistic success in 3D demands a true artistic
gift for composition, balance, shadow & light, etc., etc.
How is this
art created?
3D images contain
objects created using 3D object modeling software, much like a traditional
mechanical CAD (Computer Aided Design) program is used to design/draw
physical objects, such as engine parts, etc. The artist creates
the 3D objects seen in the final artwork by creating individual
parts and assembling them into larger assemblies to form complete
objects. Using specialized software, the artist also creates natural
objects such as water, mountains, trees, etc., and minutely programs
their textures and other characteristics.
These objects
are then positioned together in a scene. The scene's lighting colors,
types, angles, etc., are then carefully programmed. If it's an outdoor
scene, the artist composes nature elements such as sky colors, lighting,
clouds, sun angle, haze & fog, shadows, etc.
When all the
above is complete, the computer is instructed to "render"
the composed scene, which can take from a few minutes up to several
days depending on the scene complexity and other factors.
When computer
rendering is complete, the artist frequently takes the rendered
2D image into a paint program and reworks certain details of it
for realism and to create various effects.
